Paint Lap Marks

Paint Lap MarksPaint lap marks refers to the difference of color and sheen in the paint film due to bad paint application, poor paint quality, weather conditions or paint surface. The streaks appear as a deeper color or an increased gloss where wet and dry layers overlap during the application. It is important to move quickly when painting to help with a seamless paint application.

Causes

There are a variety of reasons for lap marks to appear. When the paint dries quickly before the next application, the wet and dry edges of both applications overlap and cause it to form a clear cut line that is visible through the coating.  Direct sunlight or even a windy day can cause the paint to dry to quickly causing the seams to appear. poor quality paint and applying the paint in a different thickness can also cause problems. The paint application surface can also add to painting problems, especially when the surface is porous.

Prevention

There are several painting techniques and methods that can help prevent paint lap marks. When you paint, brush and roll from the wet area to the dry area to produce a smooth appearance. If you are painting on a porous surface, use a primer or a sealer first. Apply a consistent amount of paint with the same thickness to help with an even application. For best paint results, paint an area that is not too large. A wet edge can be maintained by applying a paint a short distance away from where you began and continue rolling and brushing back into the wet area which prevents lap marks. It is important to use quality paint, like Benjamin Moore paint, to ensure beautiful and durable results.
