Interior Design: High Ceilings
When it comes to designing a room with tall walls and high ceilings, it can seem like quite a monumental task to fill the space. It seems easy to fill a space when it is horizontal, especially closets, but when it comes to vertical space, it can pose some unique decorating challenges. If the space is not designed to include the extra high space, the room can feel cold and empty. In order to avoid this design faux pas and successfully incorporate the high ceilings into your design, you will need to blend the upper and lower areas by helping to draw the eyes upwards.
Window Treatments
It is important to hang draperies at ceiling height. If they are hung lower, it creates a division in the wall and makes the upper area feel isolated. It may seem like it will be too much at first, but the effect is dramatic and will complete the room. Consider using a solid color as patterns can overwhelm a room with high ceilings.
Artwork
Use your empty wall space to showcase your artwork. This could be a great opportunity to do a gallery or a collage style design on your wall space. You can incorporate different styles, shapes, and colors, but make sure they all tie together and help draw the eye upwards.
Shelving
Shelving is a great way to fill a space in a creative way. When it comes to high ceilings, you may have to combine book shelves with art shelves. You can also consider hanging floating shelves in different spots on the wall. Shelving can create a dynamic and fun use of tall wall space.
Paint A Feature Wall
A feature wall from the floor all the way to the ceiling can help bring the two parts of the room together.
